Well this past weekend I decided to work on my truck a little bit. A hose had been hanging down from under the engine and had melted a little, so I figured I'd take a look. So I went outside and started
organizing my tools and stuff and I happened across the garbage can, where I noticed quite a
menacing looking spider web. I had never seen anything like it before. It was fairly large as spider webs go, and it was not
symmetrical at all. It was just crazy, no rhyme nor reason too it, just all over the place. Well needless to say I was taken back a bit by it, and was
cautious. So I got out my handy dandy
Ortho Home Defence Max™ and sprayed the whole web to see what was going on. Then all of a sudden a big black spider (See photo insert) started lowering itself down from under the garbage can lid to the ground. I was able to identify the spider as a black widow. This is the first one that I have seen down here, we are warned about them, so I kinda wasn't all that
surprised. My first inclination was that looks like a pretty bad ass spider. Something I would not want to mess with. The spider now laying on the ground twitching still from the poison, I thought I'm pretty sure Lisa would like to see this. So I went and got her out of bed, normally that is not really a smart thing to do, as she can be quite grumpy but as soon as I said you like scary things right, she jumped out of bed grabbed her glasses and darn near ran outside. Well after we looked at it for a while and poked it with a stick we decided that this would be a good blog post, so we ran and got the camera. After taking some pictures Lisa noticed another spider still on the garbage can. So we sprayed more
poison and down that one fell too. It was kinda a brownish color but still had the red mark on the
abdomen. Well come to find out it was a male, I guess only the mature females are black. There was also a egg sack that I crushed. The one other thing I took from this
experience was that the web was pretty strong. It was stronger than any other spider web I've run across. Take a look at the pictures below, pretty neat.
